Descript's September 2025 pricing overhaul changed how Studio Sound works, and not in users' favor.
- Studio Sound now costs 10 AI credits per use. Before September 2025, Studio Sound was effectively unlimited on paid plans. Now every clip you enhance draws from a monthly credit pool: 400 credits on Hobbyist ($24/mo), 800 on Creator ($35/mo). At 10 credits per use, a Hobbyist user gets roughly 40 Studio Sound uses per month before hitting the cap.
- Two-pool credit system is confusing. Descript now charges separately for media minutes (consumed when you upload or record) and AI credits (consumed by AI tools like Studio Sound). Multi-track recordings consume multiple times the media minutes. Credits don't roll over.
- No standalone API. There's no way to integrate Descript's audio enhancement into your own app, pipeline, or workflow. It's locked inside the Descript editor.
- You're paying for an editing suite when you just need audio cleanup. Descript plans start at $24/mo and go up to $65/mo. If your goal is removing background noise from recordings, you're bundled into a full video and podcast production platform.
