Frequently asked questions
Supported files and upload limits, plans and billing, and how Diffio stores, deletes and uses your recordings. The privacy policy and terms of service are the full versions of the privacy and billing answers.
Getting started
What does Diffio do?
Diffio restores speech in recordings you have already made. Upload audio or video and Diffio reduces background noise, echo, reverb, distortion and the thin sound of a poor mic, then returns the restored speech and the background as separate tracks. See how it works.
Is Diffio free to try?
Yes. The Free plan includes 3 uploads in total (not per month), audio or video, restored with Diffio 4.6 Flash. You can play the first 2 minutes of each result. Full playback, downloads and Diffio 4.6 Pro need a paid plan. See pricing.
Do I need an account?
Yes. Create a free account to upload. Your projects, results and transcripts are saved to it so you can come back to them.
What kinds of recordings does Diffio work on?
Recorded speech: podcasts, interviews, lectures, voice memos, old recordings and video. It handles traffic, wind, crowds, room echo and bad mic audio.
What doesn't Diffio do?
Diffio works on files after they are recorded, so it doesn't filter live calls. It is built for speech, not for pulling vocals out of finished songs. It doesn't split overlapping speakers into separate tracks, master loudness or remove filler words, so pair it with your editor for those jobs.
Uploads and files
Which file formats can I upload?
Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC and OGG. Video: MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM. If your file is in another format, export it as WAV, MP3 or MP4 first.
How large or long can a file be?
Each file can be up to 90 minutes long and up to 2 GB, on every plan, including Free. Split longer recordings into parts and upload each one.
Can I upload video?
Yes, on every plan. Diffio restores the soundtrack and leaves the picture unchanged, so there is nothing to re-sync. Paid plans download the full MP4 with the restored audio.
Which languages are supported?
Both models are multilingual. English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese have been validated for quality. Other languages still run, with a notice that quality hasn't been validated for that language.
Which browsers work with Diffio?
Current versions of the major browsers. The original versus restored player needs Web Audio features that older browsers lack; see supported browsers for minimum versions.
Models and results
Should I use Diffio 4.6 Flash or Diffio 4.6 Pro?
Diffio 4.6 Flash is fast and is on every plan, including Free. Diffio 4.6 Pro is the best quality and is on every paid plan, starting with Basic. Use Pro for wind, crowds, loud rooms and distant voices. Compare the models.
How long does restoration take?
Most files finish in minutes. Flash runs about 30 times faster than real time and Pro about 10 times faster. The original versus restored comparison starts playing while restoration is still running.
Can I run the same recording again with another model?
Yes. Run a new restoration on the same project and compare the results. On paid plans each run uses minutes equal to the file's length. On Free, running a project again doesn't use another of your 3 uploads.
Can a restored result differ from what was said?
Yes, in small ways. Diffio's models are generative: a restored result is a reconstruction of the speech in your recording and can differ from the original, including individual words. Keep your original and check quotes against it before you rely on them.
Which recordings are hardest to restore?
A speaker far from the mic, heavy clipping, two people talking over each other and noise louder than the voice. Where noise covers a word completely, little of the voice is left to restore. Try your toughest clip on the Free plan before you decide.
Do I get a transcript?
Yes, when one is available. The project page shows a timestamped transcript that you can read and copy.
Downloads and sharing
What can I download?
On paid plans you can download the restored speech, the background or your mix of the two, as WAV (lossless) or MP3. Video projects also download as MP4 with the audio you chose. The Free plan doesn't include downloads.
What happens to the background noise?
Diffio separates it into its own background track instead of discarding it. Leave it out for clean speech, or use the Background amount slider to bring back room tone, applause or music.
Can I use results commercially?
Results made on a paid plan or paid API account can be used for any lawful purpose, including commercial work, with no extra fees or attribution, and those rights continue after your subscription ends. Results made on the Free plan are for personal, non-commercial use, such as trying Diffio. You still need the rights to the original recording. See section 5 of the terms of service.
Plans and billing
What plans are there?
Free, plus 2 monthly plans: Basic includes 6 hours of audio or video a month and Pro includes 30 hours. Both paid plans include Diffio 4.6 Pro, full playback, downloads and video. Current prices are on the pricing page.
How are minutes counted?
By the length of the file you restore. A video counts once for its length, not separately for picture and sound. Each restoration you run uses minutes, and if a restoration fails, its minutes are returned.
Do unused minutes roll over?
No. Your plan's allowance resets at the start of each billing period.
How do I cancel or change my plan?
Open your profile and select Manage App Billing. The billing portal shows each change and when it takes effect before you confirm. If you cancel, you keep your paid plan until the end of the period you have paid for.
Do you offer refunds?
Fees are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise or where we agree in writing (section 7.4 of the terms of service). If something went wrong with a restoration or a charge, contact us.
Privacy and data
How are my recordings stored?
Uploads, results, transcripts and project history are stored in your Diffio account on the cloud hosting providers that run the service for us, protected by technical and organizational security measures. You keep ownership of everything you upload. See sections 5 to 7 of the privacy policy.
Who can see my recordings?
Your projects are private to your account. Someone else can play one only if you share a link to it. Diffio doesn't publish your recordings or share them with other customers. Service providers process data on our behalf, and we disclose information only in the limited cases the privacy policy lists, such as a legal requirement.
How long do you keep my recordings?
Until you delete them. Projects, uploads, transcripts, results and history stay in your account until you remove them. Limited records such as billing, tax and security records may be kept longer where required. Diffio isn't a backup service, so keep your own copies of important files.
How do I delete a recording?
Delete the project from your dashboard or from the project page. Deleting removes the project's content from our active systems. We don't keep backup copies of deleted projects, so deleted content can't be recovered.
How do I delete my account?
Email support@diffio.ai from your account email with the phrase "DELETE DIFFIO AI ACCOUNT". We remove your account, projects and stored files and reply within one week. See data deletion for the steps.
Do you use my recordings to train Diffio's models?
Yes, unless you opt out. Uploads, transcripts, results and transcript corrections may be used for model training, fine-tuning, evaluation, quality assurance and benchmarking. Content used this way stays under the same access controls as the rest of your account and is never published or shared with other customers. See section 4 of the privacy policy.
How do I opt out of model training?
Open your profile and, under Privacy & data, turn off "Use my recordings to improve Diffio's models". You can do this at any time. It stops new content from your account being used from then on. It doesn't undo training that already happened, and it doesn't change how your recordings are processed for you.
API and support
Is there an API?
Yes. The REST API and the Python and Node SDKs run the same models. API usage is billed per second of source audio or video, separately from app plans, and every API account starts with a one-time $5 usage credit. See the API overview, API pricing and the quickstart.
How do I get help?
Email support@diffio.ai or use the contact page.
